Shulamith Kreitler

Objectives: The workshop is designed to provide the participants acquaintance with the theoretical concepts, empirical assessment tools and intervention techniques based on the cognitive orientation approach (Kreitler & Kreitler). Cognitive orientation is an empirically well-validated approach to motivation and behavior that enables understanding, predicting and changing behaviors concerning health and attitudes relevant for physical health disorders. The major constructs are meaning, motivational disposition, beliefs of four types, and behavioral program. No assumptions about the involvement of rational decision making and evaluation of benefits are made. Examples will include compliance behavior in diabetic patients, undergoing tests for the early detection of cancer, and coping with side-effects of chemotherapy for improving quality of life.

Activities: The participants will get practice in constructing and using the tools through concrete exercises and will study and experience the intervention procedures through role-playing and concrete demonstrations.

Description of the intended participants: Individuals who have at least a BA degree in psychology. The language of the workshop is English but the facilitator can provide explanations also in German.
